Dance for Creativity

I (Francois Griesel) was asked to take pictures of dancers for our church.

I had 3 different themes I worked with, the first was Breakdancing.  I got a dancer
from our church who was brilliant,  and we went to a place in town, where graffiti
was sprayed all over the walls.  I used multiple flash exposures to capture the shot.  I also experimented with some radio slaves and flash lights.

The second theme I used was a Ballet Dancing.  I wanted to capture the grace in the movement of the ballerina, and decided to use a panoramic shot for this specific event.
I also used bright materials to show the flow of the movement.  My main light source here was only a external flash.

My third and final theme was African Dancing.   I wanted to capture a modern dancing with this shoot, based on the Africa theme.  I got an amazing model, Fifi, who was great in dancing, and expressing herself.  Here I used reflectors and flashes.

I have learned so much in these 3 shoots.  Also our senior classes are going to do the multiple flash exposures.  Its really loads of fun.

Something Else – Naval Hill

On the 1st of March our beginner photography classes had a practical on Naval Hill in Bloemfontein.

We arrived at the viewpoint on Naval Hill around 6pm this (1March 2011) afternoon.  We discussed how we are gonna take the photos, where and what is important.  Then we waited for the sun just to give us that golden hour!

The shoot went great, although it’s not fashion or portraiture, something else every now and then is also good.

Fashion Shoot –

I took these photo’s around last year September/October, and I just recently rediscovered them.

On this shoot, we went to a location in the middle of Bloemfontein’s party street, in 2nd Avenue.  The model: Nadia de Jager was very relaxed, I used the standard lens for my Canon, and a reflector in the background, to give me harsh light on the subject.

Because this is a fashion shoot, anything goes.  I experimented with colour, and composition and my lighting.

This turned out to be one of my favourite shoots so far.

Adriaan Smit – 7 February 2011

On Monday night, 7 February 2011,  our senior classes started their learning experience in the studio.
We organized a male model for them, Adriaan Smit.
Adriaan has done some model work for other photographers and was used to being infront of the camera.
We used a white backdrop, with basic set up for lights.  The theme was fashion, we experimented with different angles, high key black and whites where we completely made the background dark, and also full length shots.
We took some great shots and I think everyone learned alot from the studio photography experience, it was really a great learning moment for everyone.

Studio Photography – 2 February 2011

Yesterday, model Nadia de Jager came for a visit in our studios.  Her high energy and positive attitude was amazing, and we immediately got started.

We started off with some fashion shots and then experimented with the lighting and backdrop colours. This was truly an amazing time in the studio.

We used a white backdrop, and with the help of “gels” we changed the backdrop to any colour we basically wanted.  We also used the light with the “gel” to shine onto her hair, to create that ultra purple colour on her hair.
